Records, Documents in Print and Digital Environments [17:610:586] -
Tuesdays 3:10 – 5:50 pm, Rm. 304
This course will survey current scholarship on authorship, reading, and
publishing. The course will examine production and circulation of
knowledge in light of changing technologies, institutions and textual
forms. It aims to provide an overview and a framework for comparative
perspectives on text and image and the history of text technologies,
covering oral, manuscript, print and electronic environments, focusing on
regulatory frameworks in which books are created, circulated and used. It
deals with the nature of writing and text technologies, exploring print,
non-print, and digitality, reception and literacy, communities and
institutions that collect and circulate books and information. The course
will present a critique of the technological revolution paradigm and will
involve a research project in which students will explore an area of their
interest from a perspective unique to history of books.

entitled “Secret Print:  A Conversation About Archival Research” at
the Alexander Library McDonald Room, and a public lecture on April 19
at 2pm “Clandestine Printing in Revolutionary England: The Emergence
of the Leveller Movement” in the Pane Room.
